Craft Beer - Cerveza Artesanal in Peru

Emerged over 30 years ago in the US, then spilled over to Europe a few years ago and now the trend completely arrived in Peru: Craft Beer or as it’s called here “Cerveza Artesanal". Craft Beer or Cerveza Artesanal literally means crafted or traditionally brewed beer. But this explanation doesn’t reflect the real meaning of today’s specialty beer scene. Craft Beer is more than home-brewed beer: it’s not an industrially produced beverage off the shelf, but rather something that stands out from the crowd; a quality product with character and big flavor.

The brewers of Cervezas Artesanales still stand at the brewing kettle themselves experimenting with different ingredients - sometimes with pride within the German purity law, other times with unorthodox additions - and creating exceptional and extraordinary beers. So don’t be surprised to find Quinoa Beer, Honey Ale, Oat Stout, Coffee Porter, beers with fruits such as guanabana, Peruvian lime and passionfruit, Coca Beer and other interesting options.

The Lima Beer Week, held until the 23rd of October in Peru’s capital, offers a great opportunity to get to know these sometimes unusual, but always flavorful beers. The Union of Craft Beer Brewers of Peru (UCAP) organizes numerous events including beer tastings, conferences, presentations, courses, brewery tours and festivals in different bars, restaurants, hotels and breweries around town to promote the work of the producers, distributors and establishments offering these unique and delicious beverages.

Participating in the Lima Beer Week are the following Craft Beer brewers: 7 Vidas, Ágora, Barbarian, Barranco Beer Company, Beerstache, Candelaria, Cumbres, Curaka, Cevecería Del Valle, GreenGa, Hops, Invictus, Jaya Brew Company, Limamanta, Maddok, Magdalena, Nuevo Mundo, Oveja Negra, Planeta Bierra, Saqra, Melkim, Sierra Andina, Tío Luque, Zenith, Teach, Vicuña, Knock Out.

To end the Lima Beer Week, on Sunday the 23rd of October the 1st Peruvian Craft Beer Cup is awarded to the best local Craft Beer at the Cervecería Hops, (Av. General Manuel Vivanco 785 in Pueblo Libre).
