Recently INEI, Peru’s National Institute of Statistics, published in its latest Employment Report for the time period March to May 2017 the newest numbers regarding the employment market in Lima; data for whole Peru unfortunately is rare and hard to come by.

Employment and unemployment rate in Lima 2017

According to above mentioned report, 93.4% of the economical active population in Lima was employed in the analyzed period. While 59.1% enjoyed a proper employment – a minus of 1.3% compared to the same period of the previous year, a staggering 34.3% (up 1.8%) were underemployed (10.6% by hours and 23.7% by income).

69.5% of employees in Lima have some sort of health insurance – from these 62.2% are insured through El Salud, 35.9% through SIS and only 1.8% through a private health insurance – leaving 30.5% without coverage in case of illness.

The official unemployment rate in Lima is 6.6% (down 0.5%), meaning that about 340,000 people were actively looking for a job in the Lima Metropolitan Area – unregistered job seekers are of course not reflected in the statistic and therefore the actual numbers might be higher.

Average wage in Lima 2017

The monthly average income in Lima was S/ 1,622.70 (about US$ 500) per month in the period March to May 2017. While men earned on average S/ 1,862.40 per month (about US$ 570), women only received S/ 1,320.10 (about US$ 400) on average per month.

As nearly everywhere around the globe, education pays off in Peru as well. While employees with an elementary, junior high or high school education only earned between S/ 1,024.30 and S/. 1,452.60 per month (US$ 300 - US$ 450), those with a university degree earned on average S/ 2,610.10 per month (US$ 800).
