As part of the activities for the celebration of the Bicentennial of Peruvian Independence in 2021, the Peruvian Ministry of Culture and the national postal service Serpost, presented during a ceremony held in Lima’s famous Casa de Correos y Telégrafos, the old central post office in the city center, a new series of postage stamps and postmarks, which pays homage to the most outstanding and emblematic characters and events in the fight for independence.
The special series includes 12 postage stamps commemorating the heroes and martyrs of Peru’s Independence, including Juan Santos Atahualpa, Túpac Amaru II (José Gabriel Condorcanqui), Micaela Bastidas, María Parado de Bellido, Mariano Melgar Valdiviezo, José Olaya, Tomassa Condemayta de Mendoza, Matiaza Rimachi, José Valdés, Ventura Ccalamaqui, Francisco de Zela y Arizaga and José Sánchez.
Additionally, 24 new postmarks will be issued each honoring a key event in Peru’s struggle for complete independence from Spain, such as for example the Battle of Ayacucho, the Battle of Junín, the Combat of Bellavista, the disembarkation of José de San Martin in Paracas and the capture of Arequipa.
The stamps and postmarks will be introduced progressively until 2021.
