Inca Trail closed in February

Machu Picchu and alternative hiking routes remain open

As every year the Inca Trail leading hikers to Peru’s famous Inca citadel Machu Picchu is closed in February mainly for maintenance and conservation works, but also to ensure the safety of visitors during the peak of the rainy season.

So, during February the paths and places along the Inca Trail are cleaned up and treated, damaged floors, terraces, bridges and handrails repaired, rainwater drainage canals, sanitary services and camping areas maintained and vegetation cut back. On March 1st, the trail opens again with a new shine.

While the Inca Trail is closed, the archaeological site of Machu Picchu and alternative hiking routes such as the the Salkantay Trek or the Lares Trek, both still off the beaten tourist tracks leading to Machu Picchu and both offering impressive, authentic experiences and adventures, spectacular landscapes and breathtaking views, are still open. And as usual you can reach Machu Picchu as well by train.

Even though the weather might not be the best, the closure of the Inca Trail doesn’t mean the end to your hiking dreams or to visiting Machu Picchu.
