This afternoon at around 04.30 pm a fire broke out at the Jockey Plaza shopping center, for 20 years Lima’s showpiece mall. Officials confirmed that shoppers and workers could be evacuated and access to the shopping mall is denied; at this moment there are no reports of injured persons.
According to eyewitnesses the fire started at the food court inside the Jockey Plaza and smoke quickly spread through the mall. While a spokesman of the Lima fire department assumes a short-circuit in one of the shops caused the fire, Jockey Plaza stated on their Facebook page that old cooking fat in an outlet ignited and a worker told an oven in one of the kitchens caught fire.
The fire at Jockey Plaza comes just a month after a blaze at the Larcomar shopping center in Miraflores left 4 dead.

Yesterday evening the director of the Jockey Plaza shopping center, Mariana Becerra, stated that there never was a fire inside the mall and at no time customers or workers have been in danger. According to her a blockage at one of the extraction outlets at the La Panka restaurant caused the large amount of smoke. While the shopping mall was temporarily closed, it is now open again. Only the restaurant La Panka remains closed until all extraction pipes are working.
